WBWC October Board Meeting Minutes October 4, 2007 Present: Kris, Frank, Lily, Bob, Pete, Ken Visitor: Jim Nieters Meeting start at 7PM Nancy Shore from getDowntown was not able to attend. It was noted that Nancy indicated the getDowntown program can't support the "Share the Road" program by themselves, they will require support from the City and other groups. We discussed passing out stickers and WBWC info at the "Ride Around Town" ride on Friday the 12th. It was suggested that we might obtain more charitable donations if we obtained a 501c(3). It has not yet been determined what the ongoing support requirements of a 501c(3) are. Erica had volunteered to continue looking into this while she was in Germany. It was suggested that we start lobbying the City to create a Citizens Advisory Committee for Bicycling issues. Jim Nieters indicated he knew the steps required to initiate such a process with the City. We need to support and encourage Nancy Shore to continue the getDowntown events like Bike Winter and Curb You Car Month. A long discussion was held on the Safe Routes to School program. We have not been able to find people interested in attending the National Conference in Dearborn, even if we pay the registration fee of $190. One person from the Ypsilanti area has signed up. A number of suggestions were made about people in the AA schools to contact. We decided our best focus would be on getting more participation in events starting next May. Lily indicated that Washtenaw Public Health has a grant to support two schools in the SRS program, up to $1000 per school. She was to attend a meeting on Oct 5th at Thurston Elem to find out more, somehow associated with a group called: "Huron Valley Traffic Group" which none of us had ever heard of. Lily wishes WBWC to write a letter of support to help obtain this grant. We discussed the continuing effort to identify people living in the surrounding townships that could support the Washtenaw NoMo plan in their area. It was suggested we email Jan at Pittsfield Twp to see if they are officially supporting/implementing the Non-Motorized plan. Ken pointed out that the Ann Arbor NoMo plan already calls for the City's pedestrian crosswalk language to be updated to the State code. This may be why Eli Cooper indicated that the City's legal department was already looking at this issue. Members were encouraged to send notes/emails to City Council members thanking them for improvements to Packard and Platt roads completed just recently. Lily brought info on a new bike ride in Ypsi starting on Oct 21, not sure if this is a one time or on-going ride. There was nothing new to report on membership We have 4 board members so far for next year: Lily, Bob, Frank, Pete. We still need more. A number of WBWC members attended the East Stadium Bridges meeting at Pioneer High on Tuesday the 2nd. It was fortunate we were there to present some alternate opinions to the large number of Ann Arbor Golf club members present. Their overwhelming opinion is that any change to these roads will destroy (litterly) their golf course, they came up with many creative ways to express opposition to the plan. On the other hand they indicated they didn't care what the City did with the bridges over State and the railroad because that wouldn't affect them, only the UM golf course. Other group reports: Kris reported on an MDOT meeting (MDOT Access Management Project) where it was indicated that it could be quite possible to add pedestrian activated crossing lights on Huron Ave. Bob reported that WCC seems to be finally repairing the part of the B2B trail in front of their campus that has been torn up for 18 months or so. Next regular meeting: Nov 1, 2007 Adjourned at 9pm
