Meeting Minutes - July 5, 2001

The meeting was called to order at 7:11pm by Chair Bob Krzewinski. Board members in attendance included Rebecca Kanner, Ken Clark and Kris Talley. Guests included Bob Klinger and Scott Koll. June 2001meeting minutes were reviewed with a motion to accept them by Rebecca Kanner, seconded by Kris Talley, passing unanimously. Concerning the WBWC treasury, Rebecca Kanner reported that $270.00 was in the account at the Ann Arbor Commerce Bank, an expenditure of $7.50 was made for a WBWC "For Deposit" stamp, and that Rebecca would brief Scott Koll to take over the formal position of WBWC Treasurer.

For WBWC formalization, Bob Krzewinski was still working on the By-Laws and hoped to have a completed document by the time of the August meeting. On WBWC membership, Board members would continue to contact assigned local bicycle and running retailers urging these businesses to join the organization. A suggestion was also made to have local outdoor shops (i.e. Bivouac and Wilderness Outfitters). The idea of a "lifetime" membership category was discussed with Bob Krzewinski willing to review the issue and how such memberships are done at other groups.

On WBWC Committees, there continues to be a real need for the establishment, and Chairing of, Communications, Education and Membership Committees.

Concerning WBWC communications, Bob Krzewinski will forward to Kris Talley updates to the web page, including an updated activism page and other data. On advocacy writing, contact will be made with Jim Nieters of the Ann Arbor Velo Club on a potential monthly bicycling column in the Ann Arbor News. Ken Clark will also work on a Letter to the Editor of the Ann Arbor News on Liberty/State Street redevelopment as well as an item for the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society newsletter concerning the May WBWC "Bicycling and Walking Into The 21st Century" talk.

On Actions, Bob Krzewinski reported he would be staffing a WBWC display at the Huron River Day celebration in Gallup Park on July 8th. A copy of the letter from the WBWC endorsing a grant for a Pittsfield Township non-motorized pathway was circulated. A short discussion was held on planning for May 2002 Bike Month activities.

For short term activities, Ken Clark will bring up the need for additional "share the road" signs at the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Bicycle Committee meeting. It was also requested that Ken review the list of bicycle/walking improvements in the latest Ann Arbor Capitol Improvements Plan and recommend a "top 10" list for possible action by the WBWC. Bob Krzewinski reported that he is attempting to set up a meeting with the Washtenaw County Sheriff to address the concerns and problems of bicyclists and walkers. The subject of County road improvements was also discussed with a strong suggestion that the County Road Commission be encouraged to request federal funds under TEA-21 for bicycle improvements such a road shoulders. Furthermore, the Washtenaw County 2025 Transportation Plan was discussed with Ken Clark indicating a willingness to review data on the Plan.

Bob Krzewinski also reported that a request had been made to find a person living in Pittsfield Township who is interested in cycling /walking to serve on a Township Greenways Advisory Committee. It was suggested that Craig Harvey, Chair of the Huron Valley Greens be contacted and Bob Krzewinski would do the follow-up. The subject, and ramifications, of high ozone measurements in the County were discussed as well as the Ypsilanti street improvement project (i.e. bike-friendly sewer grates).

With no other business, the meeting adjourned at 8:24pm

Respectfully submitted,
Bob Krzewinski
