Some projects that have
been recently done, or are underway or under consideration for the WBWC
include:
- Going through Washtenaw
County's Non-Motorized Plan to prioritize projects that are identified
in it. Our goal is to get projects in the 2035 Long-Range Plan (LRP)
so that they can be put into the Transportation Improvement Program
(TIP), which is the short-range funding document (with a sliding 4-year
window). To be in the LRP, a project needs to be funded; that is, it
needs to be sponsored by an implementing agency that is willing to commit
matching funds of at least 20%. (WATS
would allocate remaining funds from the federal pot it controls, which
is currently called the Surface Transportation Program [STP], although
the name may change when the federal transportation law is reauthorized.)
- Organizing a monthly Ride
Around Town in Ann Arbor since October 2007.
- Collecting information about local Safe Routes to
School (SR2S) efforts and groups involved with these efforts and
maintaining a web page on the subject, promoting SR2S to the general
public, and bringing together people and groups interested in the program.
- Participating in Ann Arbor's Bike
Fest in June of 2006 and 2007, a fabulous success that featured
bike demos, exhibits, riders and shops of all kinds, and was experienced
by a very large crowd of interested observers.
- We participated in Ann Arbor's third, Curb Your Car Month in May 2007,
including our presentation on "Non-motorized plans: what's next?"
- A screening of the documentary The
End of Suburbia for a packed room at Arbor Brewing Company in November
2005.
- Applying for Ann Arbor to receive Bicycle-Friendly Community status
from the League of American Bicyclists. It was awarded bronze-level
status in May 2005. Here are the criteria by
which we were judged.
- Having seats on the Ann
Arbor Non-Motorized Transportation Advisory Committee and the Washtenaw
County Non-Motorized Planning Committee.
- Ongoing meetings with the University of Michigan's Planning Office
and other departments to ensure that alternative transportation options
for students and staff are given adequate attention at the University.
- Sponsoring and working on Curb
Your Car Month 2005.
- Updating our collection of local snow removal policies
for 2004.
- Putting on a Winter Bike Riding workshop
in December 2004.
- Surveying local candidates in November
2004.
- Sending a highly-skilled bicycling unit to Ann
Arbor's 2004 July 4th parade.
- Participating in Ann Arbor's Earth
Day and Green
Fair events in 2004.
- Sponsoring Bike to Work Week 2004
- Sponsoring Joe Breeze when his Bicycling
to Healthy Transportation Choices Now presentation came to Ann Arbor.
- Working with Ann Arbor's Mitchell School and the Ecology Center to
establish a Walking
School Bus alternative for students to get to school.
- We submitted a list of questions
to the Washtenaw County Road Commission and got some informative responses.
- Exploring options for closing Huron River Drive to automobile traffic
on some weekend days during cycling season.
- Sponorship of Get Out and Bike Week 2003.
- Proposing enhancements
to the path over Argo Dam to increase its usefulness as a corridor
for non-motorized transportation from Northeast Ann Arbor to downtown.
- Working with local law enforcement agencies to promote safe bicycling
conditions and increase awareness of the laws as they pertain to bicycling
- In November 2002 we surveyed local
candidates for office on bike and pedestrian-related issues
- Work with the Sheriff's
department to provide biking education in local schools
- Doing an inventory
of where sidewalks are needed in the AA area
- Providing input on the State Street Area Redesign
Project
- Establishing and maintaining this website as a useful and comprehensive
resource for Washtenaw bicyclists and pedestrians
