"Safe Routes to School" (SR2S) is both an international movement to make it safe, convenient and fun for children to bicycle and walk to school and a federally-funded program in the U.S. When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from school is an easy way for kids to get the regular physical activity they need for good health. This in turn helps ease dangerous traffic jams around schools, reduces air pollution, fights global warming, unites neighborhoods and contribute to students’ readiness to learn in school.

With a 2006 survey indicating that less than 10% of Washtenaw County schoolchildren surveyed walk or bike to school, there's no question that these initiatives are needed here. Fortunately, with the passage of the 2005 SAFETEA-LU federal transportation bill, the hiring of SR2S staff at the state level, and funding for projects throughout Michigan now available, local interest in this program is growing. In addition to individual parents and other advocates, organizations including the City of Ann Arbor, the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society, Program to Educate All Cyclists, Washtenaw Department of Public Health, Project Healthy Schools, and Safe Kids Washtenaw are all working together to make sure kids in Washtenaw can safely bike or walk to school.
