State Street Area Redesign Project

So the Bicycle and Pedestrian communities can get a feel for what's being proposed on the State Street Area redesign project, we've put together this page of design ideas shown in the second public meeting. We also scanned in the redesign proposal's summary of findings.

The good news is that pedestrians are well represented and taken care of in the new design.  The bad news is that cyclists are not well provided for, though bike parking may improve in the proposed revisions.

t_large_poster_center.jpg (3687 bytes) Center of the long poster, design concept for most streets. - You have to look close to see the key details of this drawing.  The horizontal dashes on the sidewalk edge on the top of the diagram, as well as the vertical dashes on the sidewalk on the lower-left part of the drawing, are bike parking.  There are sidewalk cafe areas shown on the bottom side only. This would actually be the North side of Liberty Street, for instance.  In general, the sidewalks are different sizes.   Notice no bicycle facilities other than the bike parking, but ample sidewalk space (better seen on the dimensions images later).
t_large_poster_bike_park_long.jpg (3022 bytes) Bike parking along the length of the narrow sidewalk sections.  This is a bit of a blow-up of the bike parking parallel to the street.
t_large_poster_bike_parking_dense.jpg (3593 bytes) Bike parking in areas on the wide sidewalk sections.   This is a more interesting blow-up of the bike parking area on the bottom of the drawing.
t_large_poster_dimensions_full.jpg (2650 bytes) Full dimensions of the long poster.  The wider sidewalk is 14' 6" from storefront to curb, though they are planning to maintain a 2' clear area against the curb and the bike parking will take up about 6' of this if it really is perpendicular.  Diagonal parking is more likely, since this would only leave a clear sidewalk area of 6' 6".  The narrow sidwalk isn't any better, since it calls for 11' of sidewalk space, 2' of which is clear and 4' of which is taken for bike parking, leaving only a 5'(!) clear area.
